Spirit Airlines pilots demonstrated outside the company's headquarters in Miramar most of the day Monday after mediated negotiations ended without a settlement, the pilots union ALPA said in a statement.
The union said it wants the company to base its seniority status for pilots on years of service rather than hours flown, as the company had proposed. Air Line Pilots Association President Capt. John Prater has said basing seniority on flight hours could pressure pilots to fly when they're sick or fatigued. The union also opposes the furloughs of 54 pilots saying those cuts should not come at the same time the company reported profits for fourth year in a row.
"The picture is painfully clear," said ALPA president Capt. John Prater. "After everything our Association has done to try to recover from a lost decade in this industry, Spirit management is trying to restart the race to the bottom. I am proud of our Spirit MEC leadership and membership for standing up to absurd and grossly unfair demands and for insisting that they receive compensation appropriate to pilots flying Airbus aircraft at a major carrier. Every ALPA member and every professional pilot needs to understand that management's approach represents a threat to all of our careers and that our Spirit pilots are standing up for our entire profession."
But Spirit Airlines spokeswoman Misty Pinson did not address the details of each of the pilots' concerns, but gave CBS4.com a general comment.
"We are currently in negotiations with them and they are committed to reach an agreement that is both fair for the pilots as well as ensuring that the company remains competitive," Pinson said.
